called “Pelasgi”, from the region of Thrace.

island becomes member of the first Athenian Coalition.

passes under the rule of Sparta.

becomes member of the second Athenian Coalition and has its own coin currency.

338 BC Skiathos
passes under the rule of Macedonians.

BC Skiathos regained its democracy.

88 BC
Mithriades VI, the king of Pontus, destroyed Skiathos in his war
against the Romans.

42 BC Skiathos
again came under Athenian domination.

221 AD Skiathos reverted back to authority from the Romans.

325 AD Christianity first appeared on Skiathos.

530 AD a church dedicated to the Holy Trinity was built.

1204 AD
Crusaders took the Aegean from the Byzantine Empire and
Skiathos is
“donated” to the Venetian Gizzi brothers by the “Fragous”.

1453 AD Byzantine
empire ruling of Skiathos ends.

1538 AD The
Turkish pirate Barbarossa captured Skiathos bringing it under
control of the Ottoman empire. It was
conquered after a 7 day siege and a lot
of deaths.

1821 AD Greek
revolution against the Turkish occupation of nearly 400 years.

1823 AD Turks try to
retake Skiathos with 200 soldiers (after already being defeated),
but Greeks with Karatasos, Gatsos and Perevos as leaders win and
offer Skiathos her final, lasting independence.

1829 AD Skiathos
returns to its normal life and great progress took place in the
coming years. Only delay in the progress of Skiathos was the second
world war time period when the Germans burned the island.

During World War II Skiathos town was badly damaged by bombs. On
August 23rd 1944 the Germans burnt the town and seven young
Skiathians were executed.
